The tale of Jaka Tarub tells the story of a man who falls in love with a celestial nymph, Nawang Wulan, and steals her shawl in order to prevent her from returning to the heavens. It’s traditionally told through the perspective of Jaka Tarub, who continuously betrays Nawang Wulan’s trust and holds her hostage on earth. A new addition to my collection of feminist folktale retellings, this triptych portrays Nawang Wulan’s entrapment and subsequent liberation through the perspective of the heroine of the story.
